57 imagesThe Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983, when founder and guitarist Wayne Coyne allegedly stole a collection of musical instruments from an area church hall and enlisted his vocalist brother Mark and bassist Michael Ivins to start a band. Giving themselves the nonsensical name the Flaming Lips (its origin variously attributed to a porn film, an obscure drug reference, or a dream in which a fiery Virgin Mary plants a kiss on Wayne in the backseat of his car), the band made its live debut at a local transvestite club. After progressing through an endless string of drummers, they recruited percussionist Richard English prior to recording their self-titled debut, issued on green vinyl on their own Lovely Sorts of Death label in 1985. Of the innumerable one-hit wonders littering the cultural landscape, few, if any, were so brave, so frequently brilliant, and so deliciously weird as the Flaming Lips. To even classify the Lips as merely a one-hit wonder is to do the group a grave injustice: although their standing as a commercial entity proved little more than a blip on the radar screen, their moment of Top 40 success was simply another pit stop on one of the more surreal and haphazard career trajectories in pop music -- an acid-bubblegum band with as much affinity for sweet melodies as blistering noise assaults, their off-kilter sound, uncommon emotional depth, and bizarre history (packed with tales of self-immolating fans and the like) firmly established them as one of the true originals of the post-punk era.

51 imagesSlightly Stoopid is an American band based in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, who describe their music as "a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop, and punk." As a band, they have released eight albums (two live) with their sixth studio album, entitled Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid, released on July 22, 2008. The band was originally signed by Bradley Nowell from the band Sublime to his label Skunk Records while still in high school. Slightly Stoopid was formed in the mid 90's by members Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. While the two were still in high school, Sublime's Bradley Nowell discovered the duo and asked them to perform a set at the Foot Hill Tavern in Long Beach, California. It was afterwards that Bradley immediately signed them to his label, Skunk Records. The group were met with major record labels and were rejected three times around this time period before signing on to be on an independent label. The group is noted for their eclectic mix of punk rock, ska and reggae in their works. When the group first started out, they drew numerous influences from the likes of punk rock groups such as Operation Ivy, Rancid and Streetwise. 30 imagesTogether with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they've notched up over twenty chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica's reggae tradition, the Wailers have completed innumerable other tours, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe. They have also been the first reggae band to tour new territories on many occasions, including Africa and the Far East. Inspired by Rastafari and their ambitions of reaching an international audience, this is the line-up that pioneered roots rock reggae, and signed to Island Records in 1971. Bunny and Peter left two years later. It was at this point that the in-demand Barrett brothers - whose rhythms also underpinned innumerable seventies' reggae hits by other acts - assumed the title of Wailers, and backed Marley on the group's international breakthrough album, Natty Dread. Under Family Man's musical leadership, they then partnered Bob Marley on the succession of hit singles and albums that made him a global icon, winner of several Lifetime Achievement awards, and Jamaica's best-loved musical superstar. Subsequent line-ups have revolved around Family Man, who is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest bass players. Modest and unassuming, he was present on all of those unforgettable performances by Bob Marley & The Wailers from the seventies. He and lead singer Elan Atias form the main axis of the current Wailers - a group that's one of the last, great reggae institutions, yet which refuses to live off past glories. That's because whereas Family Man represents tried and trusted roots authenticity, Elan injects fresh excitement into a show that continues to attract enthusiastic audiences from around the world.

82 imagesmoe. is the preeminent progressive rock band on the music scene today. In a remarkable career that's touched upon three decades and produced 17 albums, the quintet of Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey on guitars and vocals, Rob Derhak on bass and vocals, Jim Loughlin on percussion and vibes, and Vinnie Amico on Drums, continues to push the standard for performance art. Critical acclaim and a solid national and international fan base has built a dedicated following that grows each year. Whether touring across the globe, headlining music festivals, or sharing the stage with such celebrated acts as the Allmans, The Who, or Robert Plant, among others, what keeps moe. at the forefront of the music scene is not only the energy and vitality of their music and songwriting, but the showmanship in which it is delivered. From its humble, inconspicuous beginnings as a local bar band in Buffalo in the late 1980s, to headlining Radio City Music Hall on New Year's Eve the past two years, moe.'s journey has been one of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Their music is clever, melodic, refined; their performances are entertaining, mesmerizing and epic. There's a reason that Rolling Stone magazine placed Chuck and Al among the top twenty new "guitar gods," why the pair were featured in Guitar World and Modern Guitar; why Jim and Vinnie have been featured in Drum! magazine; why Rob in Bass Player and State of Mind magazines -- all in the last year -- because they're that good! The renowned guitar play between Al and Chuck is fast becoming the stuff of legend. The exceptional vibe and percussion work by Jim is brilliant. The understated bass play by Rob is masterful. The seamless, efficiency of Vinnie's drum play is extraordinary. The interaction among the five represents rock and roll at its best.

They have released several albums to date and continue to tour and record together. In 2007 John Medeski and Billy Martin released an album as a duo, called Mago. 50 imagesRusted Root is a band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania known for their fusion of Grateful Dead style bluegrass rock with a strong percussion section that draws from African, Latin American, Native American, and Indian influences. Rusted Root formed in 1988 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The group's major-label debut album was 1994's When I Woke, a hit on college radio and a platinum record. Along with their live shows, Rusted Root began working on contributions to the movies Twister and Home for the Holidays. Their next studio album was Remember (1996), followed by Rusted Root (1998) and Welcome to My Party (2002). Welcome to My Party was criticized by fans, who are affectionately known as Rootheads. Many felt the band's departure from tribal grooves to a poppier feel was an attempt to sell out. Remember reached the Top 40 in the US, while Rusted Root found its sales buoyed by the use of the band's cover of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" on an episode of Ally McBeal. A live double album followed in 2004. Its greatest-hits album was released in April 2005 as part of Universal Music's 20th Century Masters series. The band has released three EPs, Evil Ways, Airplane, and Live, which came packaged with a documentary video cassette. Rusted Root's "Send Me On My Way," which hit #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 [1] is its most commercially popular song. It was used on the soundtracks of Matilda; Ice Age; the 1996 film Pie in the Sky; the film Race the Sun; YTV Canada's Are We There Yet?: World Adventure; and the Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow Philmont Trail Crew promotional video that was released in the late 1990s. Its music has also appeared on the television shows Party of Five and Homicide. Although the band continues to tour, its hard-touring days appear to be over as the group is devoting more time apart to pursue solo projects.

67 imagesGalactic started out in early 1994 as an eight member New Orleans based horn-fueled funk ensemble, playing local bars like Cafe Brasil, Muddy Waters and the Mermaid Lounge. After paring down to a sextet (drums, bass, guitar, organ, trumpet, sax) they emerged as a tight, slinky instrumental funk band "creating a whole new hybrid of funk and soul... at the forefront of the new vibe in the Crescent City with grooves and licks that kick with a stamp of authenticity" (On The One Magazine), both headlining at larger clubs like House of Blues, Maple Leaf, and Tipitina's, while still occasionally moonlighting at the legendary (and now defunct) dive Benny's (doing Meters covers and billed as The Cheaters). All the pieces were in place with the addition of veteran New Orleans singer Theryl deClouet. Theryl's natural lyricism lent gritty soul to the band's sound and put words to their musical message. The band began seriously recording in late 1994, when San Francisco-based record producer Dan Prothero was coaxed out of a New Orleans vacation to record the band, beginning a collaborative relationship that produced six albums with the band and its members. Thanks to an intense schedule, Galactic has built a large and loyal following which has become a model for countless mostly-instrumental bands to aspire to. Along the way, they've shared the stage with many of their heroes, including all members of the Meters, Maceo Parker, Medeski Martin & Wood, War, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Johnny Vidacovich and Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Music luminaries such as Charlie Hunter, Jon Fishman, Skerik, The Wild Magnolias and Warren Haynes have joined Galactic onstage. They are now a major international touring act, performing with Live, Counting Crows, the Allman Brothers Band, Ben Harper, The Roots, Widespread Panic, B.B. King, Juvenile, and Jurassic 5, crossing Europe four times and completing four highly successful trips to Japan.

14 imagesFamily Groove Company is a four piece band from Chicago that is turning heads and catching ears with a sound that is uncannily fresh, and live performances that simply envelop audiences in the fun, excitement and passion that the band radiates from the stage. Growing audiences everywhere FGC plays attest to the impact the band is making, as they bring the excitement of their live performances to ever growing venues, in more and more cities across the country. Appearances at most of the Midwest's major music festivals (Summer Camp, 10,000 Lakes, Summerfest, Wakarusa) have helped along the way, the band's steady shift from club dates to small theaters and music halls points to the great things to come, and the over 50,000 live CDs that have been distributed and traded all over the country speak for themselves. Family Groove Company is a band that music fans should not miss. FGC integrates the groove sensibility developed by funk/jazz crossover artists like Herbie Hancock and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, with thoughtful, tight song writing that takes cues from the likes of Steely Dan and the Beatles. The result? An infectious, fresh sound the band calls "groove informed jazz/rock". 2008 marked the release of not one, but two FGC records - the band's first official live album, Live in Chicago (February), and the band's third studio record, Models and Metrics (October). Live in Chicago captures the band where they are most comfortable, on stage in front of a live audience, and offers listeners a taste of the extraordinary experience fans have been enjoying at FGC performances for several years now. Models and Metrics represents the strongest statement FGC has made with a record to date. The album delivers high-energy rockers, touching moments of introspection, extraordinarily tight ensemble playing, and profoundly engaging twists and turns, both musically and lyrically.

31 imagesThe story of Nakadia reads like a fairytale that has been played out in the global village for all to witness. Born impoverished in the rice paddies of northern Thailand, this charming Thai beauty was sent to the runways of Europe to model. There she was first exposed to dance music and club life. After being captivated by electronic music she decided that it was her calling to deejay! With nothing but passion and determination, Nakadia has achieved more than anyone could envision. The cliché "practice makes perfect", seems to define Nakadia's work ethic and enthusiasm towards her craft. Her modesty and humble nature would leave most in disbelief that she has played over 300 events in more than 200 clubs, while racking up air miles across 35 countries over the past four years! Having played the dance floors of the world, Nakadia has the ability to read the crowd and react with them in perfect unity. Her musical and technical qualities behind the decks are complimented by Nakadia's vibrant personality and strong stage presence. She absorbs the vibe from the crowd and returns it back creating a mirror of energy that is only shared between her and them. This ability has left countless dance floors soaked in admiration. In 2006, Nakadia performed as only DJ at the closing ceremonies of the World Cup Football at Berlin Olympic stadium and later would accomplish every deejays dream by playing Love Parade to over a million people.
