Siem Reap is a small city in northwestern Cambodia. It serves as the access point to the temples of Angkor and has as such transformed itself into a major tourist hub. While in 2000 most streets in Siem Reap were made of mud, in 2006 most streets were paved and modern buildings had replaced the simple buildings of the past. After seeing the temples of Angkor, it is easy to see why Siem Reap has become such a sought after destination. It is absolutely spectacular and touches the soul in an intimate way.

 • The smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara at the Bayon temple in Angkor Thom city.

The Bayon is the second most well known temple after Angkor Wat in the Angkor complex located at the center of Angkor Thom city. The ruins of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with temples numbering over one thousand, are hidden amongst forests and farmland to the north of the Tonle Sap Lake (Great Lake) and south of the Kulen Hills outside the modern city of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Angkor served as the seat of the Khmer empire and flourished from approximately the 9th century to the 13th century.

Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon temple is comprised of
54 towers with the smiling face of Avalokiteshvara.

These Buddhist Saints or bodhisattva embody the compassion of all Buddhas and are a beautiful and powerful sight to behold. Exploring the Bayon was an amazing experience.

 • This image of Banteay Srei, a richly decorated, late 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva is located in the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The temple is built in red sandstone and has beautiful bas-reliefs and decorations. It is surrounded by three enclosures with the central structure being surrounded by a moat.

Built at a time when the Khmer Empire was gaining significant power and territory, the temple was constructed by a Brahmin counselor under a powerful king, Rajendravarman and later under Jayavarman V. Banteay Srey displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. The walls are densely covered with some of the most beautiful, deep and intricate carvings of any Angkorian temple. The temple's relatively small size, pink sandstone construction and ornate design give it a fairyland ambiance.

This temple was discovered by French archaeologists relatively late, in 1914.

Angkor Wat was built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city.

It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall. All the walls of the temple are covered inside and out with bas-reliefs and carvings.
It is one of the most awe-inspiring locations I have ever been. From the sunrise to the sunset, there isn't a time of day that is not simply a spectacular time to explore this breathtaking location.

Angkor Wat has remained a significant religious centre since its foundation--first Hindu, dedicated to Vishnu, then Buddhist. Quite a few of the temples at Angkor have been restored and represent a significant site of Khmer architecture. Angkor Wat has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag and is worthy of all it's attention.
Massive fig and silk-cotton trees grow from the towers and corridors making Ta Prohm one of the favorite temples to see in the Angkor Wat temple complex. This temple was originally constructed as a Buddhist monastery as one of Jayavarman VII's first major temple projects.
The Terrace of Elephants, named because of the elephant bas-reliefs on its wall and the elephant statues flanking the staircase, was used as a giant viewing platform for public ceremonies and extends for over 1000 feet (350 meters.)

Angkor Thom, at the center of which lies the amazing Bayon temple is the last and most enduring city of the Khmer empire. It was built by King Jayavarman VII as a fortified city of almost 4 sq miles or 10 sq km on the right bank of the Siem Reap River, a tributary of Tonle Sap Lake.
