Portraits { 53 images } Created 11 Sep 2009

I am genuinely curious about people I have never met and can connect with them in just a few minutes when I place myself in an environment where I allow their energy to speak to me. The result is an image that captures the essence of a subject's expression. I prefer Portrait Photography where I show the subject in all their surroundings, where they are alive in their element. For me this is the most fulfilling aspect of Portrait Photography and allows me to appreciate being alone in someone else's world - where the world comes alive through their eyes.

  • Burmese Monk in Bagan, Myanmar
    Southeast Asia Portraits 0023
  • This image of a Cambodian Buddhist Monk was shot at the Bayon temple Ta Prohm in Angkor Thom city.

The Bayon is the second most well known temple after Angkor Wat in the Angkor complex located at the center of Angkor Thom city. The ruins of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with temples numbering over one thousand, are hidden amongst forests and farmland to the north of the Tonle Sap Lake (Great Lake) and south of the Kulen Hills outside the modern city of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Angkor served as the seat of the Khmer empire and flourished from approximately the 9th century to the 13th century.

Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon temple is comprised of
54 towers with the smiling face of Avalokiteshvara.

These Buddhist Saints or bodhisattva embody the compassion of all Buddhas and are a beautiful and powerful sight to behold. Exploring the Bayon was an amazing experience.

  • These two Cambodian Buddhist Monks were sitting in the interior of the Angkor Wat temple complex, a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level.

Angkor Wat, the world's largest single religious monument, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city.
The ruins of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with temples numbering over 1000, are hidden amongst forests and farmland to the north of the Tonle Sap Lake outside the modern city of Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Angkor Wat has remained a significant religious centre since its foundation--first Hindu, dedicated to Vishnu, then Buddhist. Quite a few of the temples at Angkor have been restored and represent a significant site of Khmer architecture. Angkor Wat has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag and is worthy of all it's attention.
It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall. All the walls of the temple are covered inside and out with bas-reliefs and carvings including nearly 2000 apsara carvings representing some of the finest examples of apsara carvings in Angkorian era art.
• The people of Laos are so genuine and the children in The Hmong hilltribe villages I visited were a highlight of my trip.

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of Laotian culture with over 33 Wats (Buddhist temples) and former royal palaces is one of the few places that will deliver a truly unique and genuine Southeast Asia experience that will certainly give you pause to replenish your soul.

Located in North Central Laos and surrounded by mountains at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers, Luang Prabang is a harmonious fusion of crumbling French colonial architecture, breathtaking natural beauty, magnificent temples and wonderful genuine people making it a great place for spiritual contemplation and rejuvenation.

Buddhism permeates every facet of life. Imagine waking up every day to the sound of bells, gongs and drums followed by morning alms with the monks from all the temples making their rounds around town.

It is truly a magical place.
