This BAS RELIEF is from the the Bayon temple in Angkor Thom city, part of the Angkor complex in Siem Reap Cambodia that includes the world's largest single religious monument, the breathtaking Angkor Wat.
The Bayon temple is surrounded by two long walls with an extraordinary collection of bas-relief scenes with over 11,000 carved figures depicting historical events. The Bayon is a Buddhist temple but it incorporates elements of Hindu cosmology and represents the intersection of heaven and earth and is located in the exact center of Angkor Thom city.
Angkor Thom is the last and most enduring city of the Khmer empire. Built as a square with sides that run exactly north to south and east to west by King Jayavarman VII, Angkor Thom is almost 4 sq miles or 10 sq km on the right bank of the Siem Reap River, a tributary of Tonle Sap Lake.
It has been featured in many book, films and video games of pop culture most notably in the Angelina Jolie film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
